How to choose the right sealant

For buyers and distributors, the key question is usually not which sealant is the best, but which sealant fits the application. Neutral silicone, acetic silicone, nail-free adhesive, water-based adhesive, polyurethane sealant, and MS polymer sealant all serve different needs.

Quick selection guide

  • Outdoor windows, curtain walls, glass joints, and weatherproof sealing: choose neutral silicone sealant.
  • Glass, ceramic, bathroom, and kitchen sealing on non-sensitive substrates: choose acetic silicone sealant.
  • Wood, stone, skirting boards, decorative profiles, and strong bonding jobs: choose nail-free adhesive.
  • Indoor wall gaps, plasterboard joints, small crack repair, and paintable joints: choose water-based or acrylic sealant.
  • Concrete joints, flooring, metal structures, automotive, and industrial sealing: choose polyurethane sealant.
  • Low odor, paintable, eco-friendly, multi-substrate bonding and sealing: choose MS polymer sealant.

Neutral silicone sealant

Neutral silicone sealant is widely used for construction and exterior weatherproof sealing. It is safer for many metals, glass, aluminum, concrete, and stone substrates than acetic silicone. It offers good UV resistance, long-term elasticity, and stable weathering performance.

Acetic silicone sealant

Acetic silicone sealant cures quickly and bonds well to glass, ceramic, and tile. It is often selected for economical retail and fast-curing applications. However, it can release an acetic odor during curing and is not recommended for sensitive metals, mirrors, coated glass, natural stone, or concrete.

Nail-free adhesive

Nail-free adhesive focuses on bonding strength. It is used for wood, panels, PVC, decorative lines, skirting boards, stone, tiles, and some metals. When selecting it, buyers should consider initial grab, final bonding strength, water resistance, weather resistance, and whether the job involves heavy materials or vertical surfaces.

Water-based adhesive and acrylic sealant

Water-based adhesive and acrylic sealant are low odor, easy to tool, economical, and usually paintable. They are suitable for indoor wall gaps, window interiors, plasterboard joints, trim edges, and small crack repair. They are usually not the first choice for long-term outdoor weatherproof sealing, immersion, high movement joints, or structural bonding.

Polyurethane sealant

Polyurethane sealant, often called PU sealant, has high bonding strength, good elasticity, abrasion resistance, and strong mechanical performance. It is commonly used for concrete joints, expansion joints, flooring, roofs, metal structures, automotive, and industrial applications. UV stability and primer requirements should be checked based on the specific formula.

MS polymer sealant

MS polymer sealant combines bonding and sealing performance. It is usually low odor, isocyanate-free, paintable, and friendly to many substrates. It is a strong option for interior and exterior joints, windows, metal panels, prefabricated construction, RVs, boats, flooring, and industrial bonding where buyers need a cleaner and more versatile product line.

What buyers should tell suppliers

To receive an accurate recommendation, share the application location, substrates, sealing or bonding purpose, indoor or outdoor exposure, paintability requirement, packaging format, target market, price range, and order quantity.
